We have found two extremely effective methods for inspiring and strengthening a passion for memorization.

Small Group Meetings
Accountability groups plan an essential role in the discipline of Scripture memorization since they provide:

  • Weekly fellowship, shared encouragement, prayer support and the powerful inspiration of meeting with those who have set their hearts on ingesting the Word of God.
  • "Let us not give up meeting together...but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching."
    --Hebrews 10:25
  • Opportunities to regularly speak the Scriptures out loud to a supportive audience of fellow memorizers. Through this you can and will gain skill, confidence and ethusiasm about publicly proclaiming God's Word to others.
  • "Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom...with gratitude in hearts to God."
    --Colossians 3:16
  • A place where you can invite believers and non-believers to hear the Word of God spoken in a warm and personal environment (much like the daily gatherings in the homes of the 1st Century Christians).
  • "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship...Every day they continued to meet together...praising God and enjoying the favor of all people."
    --Acts 2:42,46,47

A Memorization Study Course
We are commanded in Joshua 1:8 to have God's Word in our hearts so that we can speak it and meditate upon it:

"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."

Most believers know that we are to discipline ourselves to memorize Scripture, but many have no idea where and how to get started. For this reason, Living Epistles has developed an 8-week course that will introduce you step-by-step to memorizing in context by first educating you on why, according to Scripture, we are to memorize, and then the mechanics of how to actually go about it. By the time you complete the course, you will be memorizing and quoting God's Word out loud with confidence, and you will have experienced incredible blessings from God first hand.

The course is designed to be used in various ways: the lessons can be done as homework, as class work, as discussion only, or as a self-study. The first few weeks will be focused on understanding why we are to memorize, and the lesson material will take 45 minutes to an hour. The introduction into memory work is intended to be gradual. As the course progresses, less of the class time will be spent on the lesson, and more time will be devoted to quoting and testimonies.

Each student will select their own passage of Scripture to memorize at their own pace, and will quote out loud what they have learned each week. Being accountable to each other, providing support and encouragement, sharing helpful tips, and imparting what God has taught each individual through the memorizing process are vital elements of the class. Since it is a self-paced exercise, the participants themselves will set their own goals, and will determine how much time they should commit to reaching them.
